After last month’s conversational and somewhat whimsical surface pattern design for my freebies, I wished to illustrate a breezier pattern this month. I wanted this pattern to feel akin to old-fashioned floral wallpapers, but, with a clean, modern approach. I took a loose inspiration from Clematis Vines – A delicate flowering, climbing plant, which is considered a symbol for mental beauty. This pattern is part of a collection called – Summer Melody.
Clematis flowers are named based on the Greek word “klema,” which means “shoot,” or “branch”. However, the name used for these flowers in Russia also means “traveler’s joy”. So beautifully apt. After all, the clematis travel as they climb so gracefully on walls and trellises!
